When you need to make a quick decision — such as leaving home for an important job interview, signing a business contract, buying a vehicle, or making an online payment — consulting a full astrological birth chart is not always practical.

This is where Choghadiya (also spelled Choghadiya Muhurta) is widely used across India as a swift, reliable method to evaluate the energetic quality of the current hour.

What is Choghadiya?

The word Choghadiya originates from Cho (Four) and Ghati (An ancient Indian time measure equal to 24 minutes). Thus, one Choghadiya equals 4 Ghatis, which translates to approximately 96 minutes (1 hour and 36 minutes).

In Choghadiya timing:

  • The total duration from local sunrise to sunset (Day) is divided into 8 equal Choghadiya windows.
  • The total duration from local sunset to the next sunrise (Night) is divided into 8 equal Choghadiya windows.

Because day and night lengths change throughout the year, the exact duration of each Choghadiya varies slightly depending on season and geographic location.

The 7 Types of Choghadiya & Their Meanings

The 8 day and 8 night segments cycle through seven distinct planetary categories:

AMRIT (Nectar) ──> SHUBH (Auspicious) ──> LABH (Gain) ──> CHAR (Movable)
                                   │
ROGA (Disease) ──> KAAL (Loss) ──> UDVEG (Anxiety)

Auspicious Choghadiya Windows (Green Light):

  1. Amrit (Ruled by Moon):

    • Meaning: "Nectar of Life."
    • Best For: Highly auspicious for all activities, religious ceremonies, healthcare, travel, and financial beginnings.
  2. Shubh (Ruled by Jupiter):

    • Meaning: "Auspicious & Holy."
    • Best For: Weddings, housewarming (Griha Pravesh), education, spiritual rituals, and long-term commitments.
  3. Labh (Ruled by Mercury):

    • Meaning: "Gain & Commercial Profit."
    • Best For: Starting a new business, launching products, trade, accounting, financial investments, and education.
  4. Char (Ruled by Venus):

    • Meaning: "Movable & Dynamic."
    • Best For: Travel, buying vehicles, logistics, moving house, and dynamic activities.

Inauspicious Choghadiya Windows (Caution):

  1. Roga (Ruled by Mars):

    • Meaning: "Disease or Conflict."
    • Guidance: Avoid starting medical procedures or initiating delicate negotiations; best reserved for sports or physical exercise.
  2. Kaal (Ruled by Saturn):

    • Meaning: "Time / Delays."
    • Guidance: Avoid starting new wealth initiatives; good for routine maintenance, clearing backlog, or rest.
  3. Udveg (Ruled by Sun):

    • Meaning: "Anxiety or Restlessness."
    • Guidance: Avoid high-stress confrontations or signing critical legal papers; focus on routine tasks.

How to Determine Choghadiya Sequence for Any Day

The starting Choghadiya of each day is ruled by the weekday lord (Vaar Adhipati):

  • Sunday: Starts with Udveg (Sun)
  • Monday: Starts with Amrit (Moon)
  • Tuesday: Starts with Roga (Mars)
  • Wednesday: Starts with Labh (Mercury)
  • Thursday: Starts with Shubh (Jupiter)
  • Friday: Starts with Char (Venus)
  • Saturday: Starts with Kaal (Saturn)

Practical Example: Buying a Car or Vehicle

If you are planning to purchase or pick up a new car:

  • Select a Char (Movable), Labh (Gain), or Amrit (Nectar) Choghadiya window.
  • Ensure the selected window does not overlap with daily Rahu Kaal.
