What a Kundli Is
A Kundli (also called a Janam Kundli or Vedic birth chart) is a map of where the Sun, the Moon, the five visible planets and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu stood in the sky at the exact minute and place you were born. Jyotish reads that single moment as the blueprint for temperament, relationships, career and the timing of life's major chapters.
The free Kundli generator on GyaaniJyotish builds this chart from three facts: your date of birth, your time of birth and your place of birth. It then shows the chart in both North Indian and South Indian styles, in any of ten Indian languages, with no sign-in required.
How to Read Your Kundli
Once the chart loads, three placements appear at the top. They are the quickest summary of who the chart describes:
- Lagna (Ascendant): the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It sets the first house and is read as your body, outlook and the lens through which the rest of the chart plays out.
- Moon sign (Rashi): the sign the Moon occupied. In Vedic practice this is the sign most people mean by "my rashi", and it shapes the mind and emotional responses.
- Sun sign: the sidereal sign of the Sun, tied to vitality, father and authority. It often differs from the Western sun sign you know from newspapers.
Below that, the chart is organised into sections:
- Birth details – the Panchang of your birth day: tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana and weekday.
- Planets & charts – the main birth chart (D1) with each graha's sign, house and degree.
- Divisional – finer charts such as the Navamsha (D9) for marriage and dharma, and the Dasamsa (D10) for career.
- Dasha – your Vimshottari Mahadasha and Antardasha periods, which show which planet's themes lead each stage of life.
- KP – Krishnamurti Paddhati cusps and significators, used for precise event timing.
- Ashtakvarga – point scores that show how strong each sign is for each planet.

Why Birth Time Matters
The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, and the house each planet falls in changes with it. A birth time that is off by 15–30 minutes can move the Lagna to the next sign when it is near a boundary, shift divisional charts, and affect dasha timing. Use the time recorded on a birth certificate or hospital record where possible. If you only know an approximate time, placements near a sign or nakshatra boundary may also be uncertain.
Common Questions
Is the GyaaniJyotish Kundli free?
Yes. Generating the birth chart, viewing every section and changing the chart language are free and do not need an account.
What is the difference between North Indian and South Indian charts?
They show the same planetary positions in different layouts. The North Indian chart fixes the houses in a diamond pattern and moves the signs; the South Indian chart fixes the signs in a square grid and marks the Lagna. Pick whichever style your family astrologer uses.
Why is my Vedic sun sign different from my Western one?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the fixed stars. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. The two are currently about 24 degrees apart, so many people's Vedic sun sign is one sign earlier than their Western sign.
Can I ask questions about my chart?
Yes. GyaaniJyotish offers AI astrologers you can talk to by voice or chat. They can explain your chart and answer questions about topics such as dasha, career and marriage. Voice is available in English, Hindi and Tamil.
Like every Jyotish reading, a Kundli describes tendencies and timing rather than fixed outcomes. It is most useful as a guide for reflection and planning.
