What Kundli Matching Checks

Kundli matching (Kundli Milan) compares the birth charts of two people to judge how well they are suited for marriage. Families across India use it before fixing an alliance, and the two most common systems are Ashtakoota Guna Milan in North India and the 10 Poruthams in South India.

The free Kundli matching tool on GyaaniJyotish runs both systems side by side from each partner's date, time and place of birth, and adds a Mangal Dosha check for both charts.

How to Read Your Matching Result

Guna Milan score (out of 36)

Ashtakoota divides compatibility into eight kootas, each worth a fixed number of points. The tool shows a table with each koota, what it measures, the girl's and boy's values, and the points earned out of the maximum.

Koota What it looks at Maximum points
Varna Spiritual temperament and work outlook 1
Vashya Mutual attraction and influence 2
Tara Health and wellbeing through birth stars 3
Yoni Physical and intimate compatibility 4
Graha Maitri Friendship between the Moon-sign lords 5
Gana Nature: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa 6
Bhakoot Emotional bond, family welfare and finances 7
Nadi Health of children and constitution 8

Traditionally, 18 or more out of 36 is considered acceptable, 24–32 good and above 32 excellent. A score below 18 is usually discussed with an astrologer before proceeding.

Porutham result (out of 10)

The South Indian system checks ten Poruthams, including Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasi Adhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha. Each one is marked Match or No Match. Rajju and Vedha carry the most weight: many families treat a No Match in either as a serious concern, even when the total count is high.

Mangal Dosha analysis

Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha) is present when Mars occupies certain houses of the birth chart. The tool checks both charts and compares them. The most widely accepted balance is when both partners carry the dosha; when only one does, the question stays open for a fuller reading.

Classical considerations

This section lists traditional objections that apply to the pair, such as Nadi Dosha or Bhakoot Dosha. If it reads "No classical vetoes identified", none of the standard objections apply.

Common Questions

Is a low Guna score a reason to call off a match?

Not on its own. The total is a summary, and astrologers look at which kootas scored low, whether doshas are cancelled, and the strength of the 7th house and Navamsha in each chart. Shared values and mutual respect matter as much as any score, which is why the result ends with traditional guidance rather than a yes or no.

Do both partners need an exact birth time?

An exact time gives the most reliable result. Guna Milan depends mainly on the Moon's nakshatra, which can change during a day, so an hour's error can alter several kootas. Mangal Dosha depends on the Lagna and is more sensitive still.

Which system should we follow, Guna Milan or Porutham?

Follow the tradition your families use. North Indian families usually rely on the 36-guna score, while Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam families often give the Poruthams more weight. Seeing both helps when families come from different regions.

Can I discuss our match with an astrologer?

Yes. GyaaniJyotish AI astrologers can walk you through each koota, explain a dosha and its cancellations, and answer follow-up questions by voice or chat. Voice is available in English, Hindi and Tamil.
