What This Calculator Tells You
Where a transit chart shows the sky's mood on a given day, your Vimshottari Dasha shows the larger chapter you are living through, a planetary period that can run anywhere from 6 to 20 years depending on which graha rules it. Classical Jyotish treats this sequence as the master timeline for reading when a chart's potential is likely to activate, which is why most serious readings start here rather than with a transit alone.
This calculator returns your current Mahadasha (the major period lord), your current Antardasha (the sub-period running inside it), the date that Antardasha is active until, and a forward schedule of the Mahadasha chapters still ahead of you.
How the Calculator Works
- You enter your date, time, and place of birth.
- The tool locates your Moon's exact position at birth, since the entire Dasha sequence is anchored to where the Moon sat in its Nakshatra at that moment.
- It identifies your Janma Nakshatra and its ruling planet, which fixes the lord your first Mahadasha belongs to.
- It calculates how far the Moon had already moved through that Nakshatra at birth, which determines how much of that first Mahadasha remained at the moment you were born, and every period since is calculated forward from that point.
- The current Antardasha is located by dividing the running Mahadasha proportionally among all nine planetary lords in their fixed sequence, and identifying which slice today's date falls in.
An accurate birth time matters here because the whole sequence is timed from the Moon's position within its Nakshatra, not just which Nakshatra it occupies. A birth time that is off by half an hour or more can shift where you land within the current Antardasha, and in rarer cases can shift the Mahadasha lord itself if your birth fell close to a Nakshatra boundary.
The Calculation Method
Vimshottari Dasha divides a fixed 120-year cycle among the nine classical grahas in an unvarying order and duration: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20 years, Sun 6 years, Moon 10 years, Mars 7 years, Rahu 18 years, Jupiter 16 years, Saturn 19 years, and Mercury 17 years, after which the cycle repeats from Ketu. Your Janma Nakshatra's ruling planet tells the calculator which of these nine periods you were born into.
From there, the same nine-lord sequence, in the same proportional order and duration, repeats inside each Mahadasha to produce its Antardashas. A 16-year Jupiter Mahadasha, for instance, contains an Antardasha of every one of the nine lords, each scaled to a fraction of that 16 years proportional to the lord's own Dasha length elsewhere in the cycle. This nesting is why two people running the same Mahadasha lord can still be in very different Antardashas, and why the calculator needs both figures to describe where you actually stand.
Reading Your Result
A Mahadasha is generally read as setting the broad theme of its years: the ruling planet's natural significations (for example, Jupiter's association with growth and learning, or Saturn's with discipline and long-term structure) tend to color what kind of opportunities and challenges surface during that stretch. An Antardasha layers a shorter, more specific flavor within that larger theme, which is usually why a single Mahadasha can still contain very different-feeling years inside it.
It is worth being direct about a common misreading: a Dasha lord's presence on its own does not predict a specific event. Classical practice reads a Dasha period together with that planet's actual strength and house placement in the birth chart, and with any relevant transits activating it, rather than treating the lord's name alone as a forecast.

These are classical timing principles read as tendencies, not certainties, and are best understood as one layer of a complete Kundli rather than a standalone forecast.
