Moon Phase Calculator

The panchanga at birth names the tithi, paksha, and nakshatra — the limbs astrologers use for temperament and timing.

The Moon's Phase at Your Birth

The Moon phase at birth is read in Jyotish through the Panchanga, the five-limbed classical calendar system used to time everything from daily activities to major ceremonies. Where your Rashi tells you which sign the Moon occupied, your Moon phase tells you something different: the Moon's relationship to the Sun at that exact moment, expressed as a tithi (lunar day) and a paksha (lunar fortnight, waxing or waning).

This placement is used less for personality reading and more for timing: classical Muhurta, the practice of choosing auspicious moments for important undertakings, leans heavily on tithi and paksha. Knowing your own birth tithi also tells you something about the emotional and energetic climate you were born into.

How the Calculator Works

  1. Enter your date, time, and place of birth. Both date and time genuinely matter here, more than for a Rashi or Sun sign, because a tithi can change partway through a calendar day. Two people born on the same date, hours apart, can fall under different tithis.
  2. The calculator determines the exact angular relationship between the Sun and Moon at your birth moment.
  3. That angle is converted into a tithi, one of thirty lunar days, and a paksha, whichever fortnight (waxing or waning) that tithi falls in.
  4. Your result names the tithi, the paksha, the broader lunar phase family, and your birth Nakshatra, the lunar constellation the Moon occupied at the same moment.

The Calculation Method

A tithi is defined by the angular distance between the Moon and the Sun along the ecliptic, not by the calendar date or the Moon's raw position alone. Every 12 degrees of separation marks a new tithi, so as the Moon pulls further ahead of the Sun each day, it works through all thirty tithis over the course of one lunar month, roughly 29.5 days.

The first fifteen tithis, from New Moon to Full Moon, make up Shukla Paksha (the waxing or "bright" fortnight). The next fifteen, from Full Moon back to New Moon, make up Krishna Paksha (the waning or "dark" fortnight). This calculation, like every other calculator on this page, is grounded in the sidereal positions of the Sun and Moon, consistent with the Lahiri ayanamsa used throughout classical Jyotish.

What Your Result Means

Shukla Paksha (waxing Moon) is traditionally read as a period of building energy, growth, and accumulation, considered favorable for starting new ventures, since the visible Moon is increasing night by night. Krishna Paksha (waning Moon) is traditionally read as a period of release, reflection, and winding down, often favored for completing existing work rather than starting fresh undertakings.

Your specific tithi within that fortnight adds further nuance: some tithis, like Purnima (the Full Moon itself) and Amavasya (the New Moon), carry particular ritual significance across Indian tradition, while others are associated with more everyday, workaday energy. Your birth Nakshatra, shown alongside your tithi, adds a further layer, since it's the same lunar constellation used to anchor your Vimshottari Dasha sequence.

Going Further

Your Moon phase is one limb of the Panchanga; the others (weekday, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana) fill out the complete picture for any given day. Check today's full Panchanga to see how these limbs read for the present date, or generate your free Kundli to see your birth Panchanga alongside your full chart.

A Moon phase reading describes classical timing tendencies, not certainties. Jyotish offers guidance, and important decisions are best made with your own judgment alongside qualified professional advice where relevant.
