What This Calculator Tells You
Your Nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied at the exact moment you were born, one of 27 stellar zones that Jyotish uses for a far finer read on personality and timing than a 12-sign zodiac alone can give. It is also the single placement that decides which Vimshottari Dasha sequence your life runs on: the ruling planet of your birth Nakshatra is the planet whose Mahadasha you are born into, and how far the Moon had already moved through that Nakshatra sets exactly how much of that first period remains at birth.
This calculator returns your Janma Nakshatra (birth star), your Pada (the quarter of the Nakshatra your Moon fell in), and the Rashi your Moon sits in. Once you know your Nakshatra, the natural next step is checking the dasha sequence it starts you on.
How the Calculator Works
- You enter your date, time, and place of birth. All three matter here in a way they do not for a simple sun-sign lookup.
- The tool calculates your Moon's exact ecliptic longitude at that moment, using your birth location to fix the correct sidereal position.
- That longitude is placed within the 27 Nakshatra segments to identify your Janma Nakshatra and, within it, your Pada.
- Your Moon Rashi is read from the same position, since a Nakshatra sits inside a Rashi rather than replacing it.
Birth time precision matters more for this calculator than almost any other on this site. Each Nakshatra spans only 13°20' of the zodiac, and each Pada within it spans just 3°20'. The Moon moves roughly 13 degrees a day, so a birth time that is off by even 20 to 30 minutes can shift your Pada, and a larger error can shift your Nakshatra entirely. If you only know an approximate birth time, the calculator will still return a result, but treat the Pada as provisional.
The Calculation Method
Jyotish divides the full 360-degree zodiac into 27 equal Nakshatra segments (360° ÷ 27 = 13°20' each), starting from 0° Aries. Each segment is further split into 4 Padas of 3°20'. To find your Nakshatra and Pada, the calculator locates your Moon's longitude and works out which of these 108 total slices it falls into.
As a worked example: a Moon positioned at 47° from the start of Aries has moved through Aries (30°) and 17° into Taurus, for a total ecliptic longitude of 47°. Dividing 47° by 13°20' places it in the fourth Nakshatra segment, inside its second Pada. The exact name that corresponds to a given degree range is listed in full in the guide linked below.
Your birth Nakshatra's ruling planet also fixes the start of your Vimshottari Dasha sequence, a separate 120-year cycle divided among the nine grahas in a fixed order (Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17). The portion of your Nakshatra the Moon had already crossed at birth determines how much of that first Mahadasha remains, which is why the same Nakshatra can still produce different remaining-period lengths for different people.
Reading Your Result
The full meaning of each of the 27 Nakshatras, including ruling planet, presiding deity, and core theme, is covered in depth in the linked guide rather than repeated here. What is worth explaining on this page is the Pada itself: each of the four Padas within a Nakshatra corresponds to one of the 12 Navamsha (D9) signs, layering a finer shade of temperament on top of the broader Nakshatra theme. Two people sharing a Nakshatra but not a Pada can read noticeably differently once this layer is factored in.
Your Moon Rashi, shown alongside your Nakshatra, is the broader 30-degree sign your Moon falls in, and it is the sign most Vedic astrologers mean when they say "Moon sign" rather than the Western sun sign. A single Rashi spans two to three Nakshatras, so knowing both together gives a genuinely more precise reading than either alone.
These are classical placement and timing principles read as tendencies rather than certainties, best understood as part of a full Kundli rather than in isolation.
