Your Rising Sign: The Lagna That Anchors Your Chart

Your rising sign, or Lagna, is the zodiac sign that was climbing the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place you were born. In Jyotish, it isn't just one placement among many: it's the reference point every house in your birth chart is measured from. Your career house, your marriage house, your health house, all of it is numbered outward from your Lagna.

Where your Moon sign shapes your inner emotional world, your Lagna shapes how life meets you from the outside in: first impressions, physical bearing, and the instinctive posture you bring to new situations. It's also the one placement on this page where getting the input right matters more than anywhere else.

How the Calculator Works

  1. Enter your date, time, and place of birth, all three required. Unlike a Rashi or Sun sign, an approximate birth time isn't good enough here.
  2. The calculator computes the eastern horizon's exact degree at your birth moment and location, since the Lagna is defined by where the ecliptic crosses the horizon at that instant.
  3. That degree is placed on the sidereal zodiac, and the sign it falls in becomes your Lagna.
  4. Your result names the ascendant sign, along with a line on the tone it sets for first impressions and how you tend to approach unfamiliar situations.

Why time matters so much here: the Lagna moves through all twelve signs roughly once every 24 hours, meaning it shifts to a new sign approximately every two hours. A birth time that's off by even thirty minutes can occasionally land you in a different sign entirely, and even within the same sign, the exact degree affects house boundaries throughout your chart. If you're unsure of your exact birth time, check a birth certificate or hospital record before relying on this result for anything beyond a rough estimate.

The Calculation Method

Like every calculator on this page, this uses the sidereal (Nirayana) zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard reference in classical Jyotish. But unlike your Rashi or Sun sign, which depend only on where a planet sits in the zodiac, your Lagna depends on the intersection of three things at once: the date (which sets the Sun and stars' general position for the year), the exact time (which sets how far the sky has rotated since sunrise), and the precise birth location (since the horizon itself is different at every latitude and longitude).

This is why place of birth, down to the city or town, genuinely changes your Lagna even if the date and time stay the same. Two people born at the same instant in different cities can have different rising signs.

What Your Result Means

Your Lagna's sign lends a general tone to physical presence and instinctive approach, the same twelve signs and elemental themes described in the full Rashi reference table apply here too, though read through the lens of outward demeanor rather than inner emotion. A fire-sign Lagna like Mesha or Simha tends to read as direct and quick to act, while a water-sign Lagna like Karka or Meena tends to read as more absorbing and quietly perceptive.

Because your Lagna sets the frame for every house in your chart, it's best read as part of a complete Kundli rather than on its own. Generate your free Kundli to see your Lagna alongside your full house-by-house chart, Rashi, and current Dasha.

A rising sign describes a classical tendency in how you're perceived and how you approach the world, not a fixed verdict on your character. Jyotish offers guidance, not certainty.
