How to Read a Daily Panchang: Tithi, Vaar, Nakshatra, Yoga & Karana
Learn how to read a daily Vedic Panchang step-by-step. Understand sunrise calculations, lunar tithis, star nakshatras, solar-lunar yogas, and karanas.
The word Panchang translates directly from Sanskrit as "Five Limbs" (Pancha = 5, Anga = Limb). It is the authoritative traditional astronomical calendar used in Vedic culture to map the daily flow of cosmic energy.
Whether you are checking the auspicious timing for an important meeting, planning a family puja, or determining a fast (Vrat), knowing how to read the five limbs of a daily Panchang empowers you to make mindful, well-timed decisions.
The 5 Limbs of Panchang at a Glance
A daily Panchang tracks five specific astronomical metrics measured relative to your exact geographic location and local sunrise time:
1. Tithi (Lunar Day) ──> 2. Vaar (Solar Weekday) ──> 3. Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion)
│
4. Yoga (Harmonic) ──┴── 5. Karana (Half Lunar Day)
1. Tithi (The Lunar Day)
A Tithi is calculated by the angular distance between the Sun and Moon. As the Moon orbits Earth, every 12 degrees of distance gained from the Sun completes one Tithi.
- There are 30 Tithis in a complete lunar month:
- Shukla Paksha (Waxing Phase / Bright Fortnight): 15 Tithis ending in Purnima (Full Moon).
- Krishna Paksha (Waning Phase / Dark Fortnight): 15 Tithis ending in Amavasya (New Moon).
Popular Tithis & Their Significance:
- Pratipada (1st): Good for housewarming, journeys, planning.
- Panchami (5th): Auspicious for learning, wisdom, weddings.
- Ekadashi (11th): Highly sacred for Lord Vishnu worship and fasting.
- Trayodashi (13th): Dedicated to Lord Shiva (Pradosham).
- Rikta Tithis (4th, 9th, 14th): Traditionally avoided for starting peaceful long-term projects; good for decluttering or overcoming obstacles.
2. Vaar (Solar Weekday)
Vaar is the solar weekday measured from local sunrise to the next local sunrise (unlike the midnight-to-midnight calendar clock!).
Each Vaar carries the elemental nature of its ruling planet:
- Ravivar (Sunday - Sun): Vitality, government matters, leadership.
- Somavar (Monday - Moon): Emotional care, water, public relations, farming.
- Mangalvar (Tuesday - Mars): Energy, real estate, physical strength, athletics.
- Budhavar (Wednesday - Mercury): Business contracts, writing, tech, education.
- Guruvar (Thursday - Jupiter): Marriage, spiritual ceremonies, investments.
- Shukravar (Friday - Venus): Creative arts, romance, luxury, buying vehicles.
- Shanivar (Saturday - Saturn): Construction, machinery, service, charity.
3. Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion)
The Nakshatra is the specific constellation (out of 27) occupied by the Moon on a given day.
Because the Moon governs mental state and emotions, the daily Nakshatra sets the psychological tone of the day. For example, Pushya Nakshatra is universally loved for purchases, investments, and starting new projects, while Ardra Nakshatra encourages research and deep transformation.
4. Yoga (Solar-Lunar Harmonic)
A Yoga is calculated by adding the exact astronomical longitudes of the Sun and Moon and dividing the sum into 27 equal 13°20' segments.
- Auspicious Yogas (20/27): Ayushman, Saubhagya, Sobhana, Sukarma, Dhriti, Siddhi, Brahma, etc., foster harmony and smooth execution.
- Inauspicious Yogas (7/27): Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, Parigha suggest double-checking contracts and avoiding impulsive moves.
5. Karana (Half Lunar Day)
Each Tithi is divided into two Karanas (1 Tithi = 2 Karanas). There are 11 Karanas in total:
- 7 Movable Karanas: Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti.
- 4 Fixed Karanas: Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna.
Important Note on Vishti (Bhadra Karana): When Vishti Karana (also called Bhadra) is active, starting new commercial deals, travel, or weddings is traditionally avoided.
How Location Affects Daily Panchang
Because Panchang calculations depend on exact local sunrise and sunset times, a Panchang calculated for New Delhi will differ by several minutes from one calculated for Mumbai, Bengaluru, or London!
AstroGnani computes real-time location-accurate Panchang metrics using your precise GPS coordinates, giving you exact start and end times down to the minute.
