Sun Sign Calculator

GyaaniJyotish uses the nirayana (sidereal) zodiac with Lahiri ayanamsa — the same convention as classical Jyotish software.

Your Sidereal Sun Sign

Your Sun sign in Jyotish speaks to your core vitality, sense of purpose, and outward identity, what classical texts call Atma, the soul or ego principle, as distinct from the Moon's role governing the mind. It's a real and useful placement in Vedic astrology, just not the one Jyotish leans on for daily predictions the way it leans on your Moon sign or Ascendant.

The result you'll see here is likely to differ from the sun sign you already know from Western horoscope columns, and that difference is the single most common point of confusion for anyone new to Vedic astrology. It's worth understanding clearly before you read your result.

How the Calculator Works

  1. Enter your date, time, and place of birth. Time and place refine the precision of the calculation, though the Sun's sign is stable across an entire day, so an approximate time is generally enough to place you correctly.
  2. The calculator locates the Sun's exact position in the sky relative to your birth moment.
  3. That position is converted to the sidereal zodiac using the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same reference classical Jyotish software uses.
  4. Your result names the sidereal sign, along with a line on the vitality and quality it lends when you're at your most fully expressed self.

The Calculation Method: Why It Differs from Your Western Sign

Western horoscope columns use the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the Earth's seasons, the spring equinox marks the start of Aries every year, regardless of where the actual constellations sit. Jyotish instead uses the sidereal (Nirayana) zodiac, anchored to the fixed stars themselves.

Because of a slow 25,772-year wobble in the Earth's axis called precession, these two zodiacs have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees over the centuries. GyaaniJyotish measures that gap using the Lahiri ayanamsa, subtracting it from the Sun's tropical longitude before reading off the sidereal sign.

In practical terms, this shift usually pushes your Vedic Sun sign back by one sign compared to what you're used to. If your Western sun sign is Aries, your sidereal Vedic Sun sign is often still Pisces, since the constellation Jyotish is measuring against hasn't caught up to the tropical calendar date the way the seasonal zodiac has. This isn't a disagreement about your birth chart. It's two different, internally consistent coordinate systems measuring the sky differently, and Jyotish has used the sidereal one for millennia.

What Your Result Means

Each sidereal sign lends a distinct flavor to vitality and self-expression, from Mesha's direct, momentum-driven energy through Meena's absorptive, imaginative one. See the full table of all twelve Rashis and their broad themes for a quick reference across every sign, since the same twelve signs and elements apply here.

Classical Jyotish also reads the Sun's strength and house placement for themes of authority, career standing, and relationship with father figures, and the Sun's own Mahadasha period (when it comes up in your Vimshottari sequence) is traditionally associated with a phase of asserting identity and purpose more visibly. None of this depends on your sidereal Sun sign alone; it depends on where the Sun sits in your specific birth chart, which house it occupies, and how strong or weak it is there.

Your Sun sign is best read alongside your Moon sign and Ascendant, not in isolation. Compare the two directly in our Moon sign vs Sun sign guide to understand why Jyotish treats them as answering different questions.
