What a Shubh Muhurat Is
A shubh muhurat is an auspicious window of time for beginning something important. In Vedic tradition a muhurta is a unit of 48 minutes, one-thirtieth of a full day, and a shubh muhurat is a period that the Panchang marks as favourable for a start, whether that is a puja, a purchase, a journey or opening a business.
The free Shubh Muhurat calculator on GyaaniJyotish gathers the day's favourable windows for your city and date into one list, with no sign-in, and shows the periods to avoid right below it.
How to Read the Shubh Muhurat List
The Auspicious timings section is highlighted on this page. It contains:
- Abhijit Muhurta, the eighth of the fifteen muhurtas of daylight, which falls around local midday when the Sun is highest. Its length follows the length of the day. Tradition treats it as one of the strongest windows of the day for most kinds of work.
- Choghadiya windows marked favourable, each labelled with its name and whether it falls in the day or night, such as "Choghadiya Amrit (day)". The favourable Choghadiyas are Amrit, Shubha, Laabha and Chara.
The Inauspicious timings section that follows lists Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda Kalam, Gulika Kalam and Durmuhurtam. Use both lists together.
Choosing a Window Step by Step
- Note the favourable windows in Auspicious timings.
- Strike out any part that overlaps an entry in Inauspicious timings.
- From what remains, prefer Abhijit Muhurta or an Amrit or Shubha Choghadiya for important beginnings, and Chara for travel.
- Check the tithi and nakshatra in the Panchang panel. Tradition avoids some days, such as Amavasya, for many celebrations.
What This Page Does Not Cover
Major life events such as a wedding, griha pravesh (housewarming), mundan or naming ceremony are traditionally timed with much more than the day's windows. Astrologers also weigh the month, the tithi and nakshatra, the rising sign at the chosen moment, and the birth charts of the people involved. The windows on this page are best for everyday decisions or as a first shortlist.
Common Questions
Is Abhijit Muhurta good every day?
It is widely used on most days. Several traditions make an exception for Wednesday, when Abhijit Muhurta is often not used for important beginnings.
What if a good Choghadiya overlaps Rahu Kalam?
Most families use only the part of the Choghadiya that falls outside Rahu Kalam. If the overlap leaves very little time, pick another favourable window later in the day.
Can I find a muhurat for a future date?
Yes. Choose the city where the event will take place and the date in the calendar, then select Get Panchang.
