What Vaar Means

Vaar (vara, or vasara) is the weekday, one of the five limbs of the Panchang. Each of the seven days is ruled by one of the seven visible grahas, and the ruler colours the day: tradition links each weekday with particular deities, fasts, colours and kinds of work.

The free Vaar calculator on GyaaniJyotish shows the weekday and its ruling planet for your city and date, with no sign-in.

How to Read the Vaar

The Vaar entry in the Panchang panel is highlighted on this page. It shows the weekday name and, below it, Lord followed by the ruling planet. The header gives the sunrise for your city, which is when the Vedic weekday begins.

Weekday Sanskrit name Lord Traditionally associated with
Sunday Ravivaar Sun Surya worship, authority, the father
Monday Somvaar Moon Shiva worship, Somvaar vrat, home and family
Tuesday Mangalvaar Mars Hanuman worship, courage, physical effort
Wednesday Budhvaar Mercury Ganesha worship, study, trade, communication
Thursday Guruvaar Jupiter Vishnu and guru worship, teaching, learning
Friday Shukravaar Venus Lakshmi and Devi worship, arts, relationships
Saturday Shanivaar Saturn Shani and Hanuman worship, discipline, service

Regional customs vary. In parts of South India, for example, Tuesday is linked with Murugan as well as Hanuman.

Why the Weekday Matters for Timing

The weekday lord sets much of the day's structure. The first Hora after sunrise belongs to the weekday lord, the first day Choghadiya follows from it, and Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika Kalam each fall in a fixed part of daylight that depends on the weekday. So when you change the date, the whole pattern of timings shifts with it.

The Vedic day runs from sunrise to sunrise, not from midnight. Something that happens at 3:00 on a Tuesday morning, before sunrise, traditionally still belongs to Monday's vaar.

Common Questions

Why is Thursday called Guruvaar?

Thursday is ruled by Jupiter, known in Jyotish as Guru, the teacher. The same planetary rulers give the weekday names in many languages, which is why Thursday is also linked with Jupiter in Latin-based calendars.

Which weekday is best for starting something new?

Tradition often favours Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for new beginnings, but the weekday is only one limb. A good tithi, nakshatra and muhurta on the same day matter as much.

Why do some people fast on a particular weekday?

Weekday fasts honour the deity or planet linked with that day, such as Monday for Shiva or Saturday for Shani. The choice is a matter of family custom or personal devotion.

Can I learn which weekday suits me personally?

Yes. GyaaniJyotish AI astrologers can look at your birth chart and explain by chat in ten Indian languages which planets and weekdays tradition would point you towards; voice is available in English, Hindi and Tamil.
