What Today's Panchang Tells You

Today's Panchang is the day's reading of the five limbs of Vedic timekeeping: the tithi (lunar day), vaar (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon's star), yoga and karana. Together with sunrise and sunset, they describe the quality of the day and frame the periods that tradition treats as favourable or best avoided.

The free Today Panchang on GyaaniJyotish shows all of this for your city on today's date, with no sign-in. If you allow location access it starts from where you are; otherwise choose your city and select Get Panchang.

How to Read Today's Panchang

Read the page from top to bottom, the way a priest scans an almanac in the morning:

  1. The header gives the city, its time zone, the date, sunrise, sunset, the sign the Moon is in, and the lunar month.
  2. The five limbs sit in the Panchang panel:
    • Tithi with its paksha (Shukla or Krishna) and the time it ends.
    • Vaar, the weekday, with its ruling planet.
    • Nakshatra with its pada (quarter) and the time it ends.
    • Yoga, one of 27 combinations of the Sun and Moon.
    • Karana, the half of the tithi in force.
  3. Auspicious timings lists Abhijit Muhurta and the favourable Choghadiya periods of the day and night.
  4. Inauspicious timings lists Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda Kalam, Gulika Kalam and Durmuhurtam. Durmuhurtam can appear twice on some weekdays.
  5. Choghadiya and Hora tables run through the whole day and night, with favourable rows tinted.

All times are local clock times for the chosen city in 24-hour format.

Reading the Limbs Together

No single limb decides a day. A family might note that today is Ekadashi for a fast, check that the nakshatra suits a planned puja, and then place the start of the work inside Abhijit Muhurta while keeping clear of Rahu Kalam. Watch the end times as well: if the tithi or nakshatra changes at mid-morning, the afternoon carries a different one, and observances tied to that limb follow the change.

Common Questions

Why does the tithi change partway through the day?

A tithi follows the angle between the Moon and the Sun, not the clock, so its length varies from roughly 19 to 26 hours. It can end at any hour. For most observances, tradition takes the tithi in force at sunrise as the tithi of the day.

Is today's Panchang the same everywhere in India?

The tithi, nakshatra and yoga change at the same instant across India, but the local clock time of that change, along with sunrise, sunset and every timing window, depends on your city. Choose the place where you actually are.

What is the lunar month shown at the top?

It is the name of the current Hindu lunar month, such as Kartika or Margashirsha. Festivals are usually fixed by the lunar month together with the tithi.
